Investment Opportunities for The Gambia

2021-2025 (Investment Guide)

by Adetunji Aderonmu

Find below the well researched investment opportunities available in The Gambia for international investors, Gambians in diaspora, Joint Venture Capitalists, Social entrepreneurs and ECOWAS citizens  to explore.

Health Sector

Gaps exist for private hospitals and specialist clinics to take care of cases referred abroad like kidney, liver, brain, heart, eye, blood cancer and more. Private laboratories with modern diagnostic equipment like CT Scan for brain, abdominal parts, dialysis machine and special body tests will be urgently required in Greater Banjul region and rural communities. Investors interested will be guided to the specific areas.

Educational Sector

Investors interested in establishing senior secondary schools, vocational training centers, Polytechnics and universities will be welcome and supported by the government especially schools established in the rural communities. Secondly, opportunities exist for supply of educational books, laboratory equipment and chemicals, instructional materials. Cambridge and WAEC recommended books are needed by most students. Countries like Nigeria and Ghana can bridge this gap in educational materials supply to the industry. There are a lot of bookshops that will be willing to do business with marketers.

Banking & Insurance Sector

There are over 12 commercial banks. Similarly, there are a lot of micro-finance companies spread all over the country. However, there is no single Agricultural Bank or Agricultural Insurance company in The Gambia. Investors are welcome to take advantage of this huge market gap.

Agriculture &  Agribusiness Sector

We welcome large commercial farms to take advantage of the abandoned swamps to grow rice or sugarcane. Crops like soybean are seldom grown and there is a huge demand for Soyabean. There exist a large market for day-old-chicks from hatchery for poultry birds. Most farmers travel to Senegal to buy their stocks and face the huge risks of mortality and operational costs. Manufacturers in the Agro-based industries can buy huge stocks of groundnuts mostly grown by the farmers to process into vegetable oil and animal feed. Similarly, there is a huge and well established cashew nut market. Investors can process the cashew nuts into CNS oil, brake oil, vinegar, Vitamin C tablets, flavors and industrial chemicals.

Farmers in Gambia are mostly using primitive tools to grow their crops. There is an urgent need to have simple appropriate tools like mini- tractors, maize harvesters, planters, Poultry battery cages, milking machines , small incubators and certified seeds.

Tourism & Hospitality Industry

The Gambia is an eco-friendly country and tourist destination in the sub-region. However, the tourist season is very short running from October through February of every year. Opportunities exist for tour operators from the sub-region to take advantage of this. A good example is, Ghana that enjoys all year tourism from Nigerians. The Gambia welcome Nigerian tourists to take advantage of the peaceful, rich culture and exotic cuisine available in the Gambia. Opportunities exist for establishments of eco-tourist centers, botanical gardens, children entertainment and amusement parks, guest houses and restaurants in the rural communities visited by tourists. Eateries like Mr. Biggs, Tastee Fried Chicken, Sweet Sensation and other popular brands, can have a branch in The Gambia.

Real Estate & Construction Industry

Construction Companies and Real estate developers desirous of building affordable homes to low-income class can explore this gap. Presently, the houses available for sale or mortgage to buyers are beyond the reach of most Gambians. Investors into building materials that are affordable and tailored for low-income earners will enjoy high patronage from Gambians.

Transportation Sector

Most of the transporters are private individuals with cars and mini-buses. The government owned transport corporation can not meet the demand locally. Opportunity exists for Commercial transport Operators that can start with new coach buses with entertainment, toilet and meal service for inter city routes and international routes like Lagos-Banjul, Banjul Dakar, Banjul Ouga routes. Air transport is very expensive between Banjul-Accra-Lagos routes. We welcome competition in the market and investors can explore this. Furthermore, there is need for water transportation of people, goods and cargos between Banjul-Accra-Lagos. Investors can explore this opportunities.

Renewable Energy Sector

Opportunities exist for alternative sources of power as a result of the erratic power supply. There is a high demand for solar panels, inverters, solar pumps, solar T.V, solar fridge/freezer, solar air conditioners, solar lightening’s, solar powered games and more. An assembly plant for solar products can be a hub to enter the West African market.

Waste Management & Recycling Sector

Waste incinerators, recycling of wastes like car tires, plastics, papers, agricultural wastes of shelled groundnuts, rice, discarded cashew fruits, vegetables are welcome for interested manufacturers, investors or NGOs.

NB: These above mentioned opportunities need to be well researched into and a proper feasibility studies is recommended on any choice of enterprise promoted before an investment is undertaken.

Hidden Treasures in The Gambia

Developing countries are always places to make huge and quick returns from your real estate investments. Assuming you invested US$1,000 about 10 years ago in a property within the suburbs or provinces; you are likely to sell it for between US$50,000-70,000 depending on the market forces today.

The Gambia situation is a perfect example of investing in a developing country. Most tourists visiting The Gambia end up buying some large piece of land in the rural, forest areas, predominantly used for agricultural purposes and turn them into organic farms with guest chalets rented out on daily basis.

An investment of US$40,000 about 4 years ago was evaluated to be worth US$200,000 today! This property was landscaped and made Eco-friendly with fruit tress and people are now rushing to build holiday resorts around it.
Now let me show you the hidden treasures. Real estate investment can be replicated in most peaceful developing countries especially like the smiling coast of The Gambia which is a good tourist destination.

There are however four major checks to make, before investing your money.

Firstly, is the area free from government acquisition? Visit the town planning office and discuss with the officials and double-check on the area.

Secondly, be sure the area is not liable to flood during the wet seasons, make your accurate findings.

Thirdly, only pay to the right person in the presence of key witnesses and get the documents legalized by the village head like “Alkalo”.

Finally, establish your physical presence by surveying and clearing the land and plant trees or fence newly purchased properties or erect a sign post to indicate the change in ownership. After payment is made, you can choose any of these six options listed below to multiply your investments:

1. Divide the land into smaller plots and resell after 4-10 years when the land will have appreciated after fencing the entire area into a housing estate.

2. Turn the land into a farm settlement and hire out the land to investors or farmers using your facility like irrigation water, farm-house, tractors etc.

3. Establish an educational institution and re-sell excess land to most people willing to buy land next to such institutions.

4. Start an Eco-friendly farmstead where tourists will come to rent your chalets, view the serenity and relax on the lawns. Bird watching, fishing expedition, hunting, organic farming can be incorporated. Skill training center can also be established to generate unique multiple streams of income.

5. Establish an orchard for fruits like oranges, cashew, mango and combine with bee-keeping while keeping small ruminants and sell the land after 6-10 years when the value will have appreciated tremendously!

6. If you have the financial muscle, why not develop the land by providing basic amenities and build different classes of homes and sell to mortgage banks to re-sell to people.

Finally, you can plan to retire into these types of investments in the next 5-15 years if you invested that savings of between US$10,000-200,000 into a small country like The Gambia where you can find hidden treasures in the form of real estate investment.

Can US$5,000 investment change your life?

Yes. Absolutely yes, especially if invested in The Gambia.
There are over 150 small businesses that can be established
and make you rich. If you read this book: Multiple Streams of
Income in The Gambia, then one will realize that, even US$200
can change some people’s destiny!

Are you short of ideas on what to do as an unemployed person, or
you desire new ideas to make income from? As discussed in some previous postings on this blog. The Gambia is a preferred destination for investors and small start-up capital businesses with high potential for growth and residual income to retire into.

From real estate, food production and packaging, recycling of waste and establishment of educational institutions, The Gambia is a sure bet to invest a little amount and recoup same within a relatively shorter span of time. It is ideal for both short and long term investments.

With a low crime rate and zero tolerance to corruption by the government, I find this robust economy friendly to wise investors. Above all, it is peaceful and investment friendly!

The cost of setting up similar businesses else where can be outrageous. Imagine setting up a bakery for US$8,000 in
The Gambia and generating income of excess US$30,000
annually compared to the cost of setting same in Lagos or
Accra for US$50,000!

Monthly payments of office or residential apartments are
allowed unlike the 2-4 year rent being demanded elsewhere.

The labour hired is cheaper and bureaucracy minimized when
a license is needed. No wonder, when I told a Lebanese friend
on a flight to Banjul that I see The Gambia paved with gold and
he smiled that he knew that 25 years ago when he first established his business with only US$500 which is worth more than US$5 million dollars today!

Plan to attend the forthcoming Business/Holiday tour of
The Gambia coming up between 28th-30th April 2011
